This incredible large black transferware soup tureen comes with a ladle, underplate and six bowls. The unusual set is decorated in the Aesthetic style with florals, Asian style fans, birds and what appears to be a colonial soldier. The pattern is also on the ladle. The handles are in the shapes of crowns and are surrounded by embossed tassels and florals. The pattern is called Java, made by Anthony Shaw c.1851-1900.
The tureen measures about 14 inches long from handle to handle, is 8 inches wide and 10 inches high. The ladle is 11 inches long and the bowl is 4 inches across. The underplate is 15 3/4 inches long and 10 3/4 inches wide. It is oval shaped with a scalloped design. the bowls measure 9 inches across. The tureen is in very good condition with some typical crazing on the base and some small spots of glaze loss on the underside of the edge of the handles. The underplate is in very good condition with crazing and slight discoloration in some of the crazing lines. There are 6 bowls, three are in excellent condition, three have hairline cracks on the rim into the bowl about 3 inches long, one bowl has a small chip. This set is a real show stopper!
