This blue and white historical transferware plate is from the "Dr. Syntax" series. "The patterns are based on drawings by Thomas Rowlandson published in the Political Magazine between 1809 and 1811 which illustrated doggerel verses by William Coombe, an inmate of the Kings's Bench debtors prison for some 43 years." (Dictionary of Blue and White Pottery, vol. 1 pg. 108) This plate is titled "Dr. Syntax taking possession of his living". It is one of thirty one patterns in the series made mainly for the American market. Marked "Clews Warranted Staffordshire" c. 1830. This could be an 1800's reproduction. The plate has the impressed "Clews" mark, it is the correct size for an original, 10 inches, but the little circles are missing from around the printed title mark. (see inset). The plate has marks on the rim from stacking during production and some discoloration on the back. Click on photo for more detail.
