This large and unusual antique black transferware plate was probably the under plate to a large soup tureen. The Romantic style design has a border with oak leaves and four cartouches with scenes of women by a lake. The central design is of a group of women playing instruments and one is dancing by the side of a lake. There are building and trees in the background. The ironstone body has an embossed acanthus leaf pattern at the handles and a slightly scalloped rim. The pattern is called "Italian Lakes". Made by J&M P Bell & Co., (Glasgow, Scotland) c. 1842-1844. The piece measures 13 1/2 inches from handle to handle and is 1 3/4 inches high. There is glaze crazing and some slight discoloration on the front. On the back there is a chip on the end of one handle and 2 chips on the underside of the rim. There is also a large chip on the inside edge of the base. This is an attractive and unusual piece. Great for display, all the flaws are on the underside. Click on photo for more detail.
