

This cobalt blue transferware covered vegetable dish by Enoch Woods & Sons, entitled "A Ship Of The Line In The Downs", dates between 1820-1850. It has the recognizable Woods shell border, with a U.S. ship flying the flag and a castle with the British flag flying in the background. A banner with "A Ship Of The Line In The Downs" is across the bottom and a small sail boat is approaching the ship. The design commemorates the War of 1812. The dish has a beautiful cabbage like finial on the lid. The base is decorated with the shell border and views of small fishing punts.This dish is pictured in the "Historical Staffordshire American Patriots & Views" book, by Jeffrey B. Snyder, on page 143. Condition: There is a small chip on the cabbage finial (see photo) on one of the leaves, and a faint hairline on the underside of one of the corners (see photo) The dish measures approx. 12 inches square and is 5 1/2 inches high.
